fit for a king

the Bayview project || Scottsdale, Arizona

The goal for this room was to take a square room and create a dining space big enough to fit the whole extended family!
We had the table custom made from extra granite that was left over from the kitchen remodel. It perfectly matches the island and creates a beautiful flow through both spaces as if it was built with the house.
The fun part about having a giant square table is that we could fit 3 chairs on each side! Which unfortunately made it feel like a conference table... So we re-purposed one chair from each side to the corner of each guest bedroom. They could be on stand-by whenever the family came over for dinner.
To give the massive 80" x 80" dining table a more cozy and intimate feeling, I decided it needed a settee. This bought us a lot more room in the walkway since I could pull the table towards the wall like a built-in booth. But finding an 80" wide settee was nearly impossible unless we wanted to spend another $5000 on seating!
We had already saved a lot of money in the budget by scoring these gorgeous Restoration Hardware chairs on Offer Up (I'm a huge believer in mixing new items with pre-loved ones whenever I can). However, putting another $5000 into seating just sounded absurd. And if you know me, if I can't find what I want.... I'll make it!
I sketched out a model for a long wood bench with a notch in the back to slide in a King sized headboard - a perfect 80" wide! Pretty genius if I say so myself.
We made a thick memory foam bench pad, added a few pillows, and it is now the most argued over seating amongst the kids in the family. I don't blame them, sitting here feels like sitting on both a cloud and a royal throne. Talk about head of the table! Dining fit for a king.
