Creating Depth

with Black

Gold Canyon project || Arizona

The decision to paint the wall black was more than creating an accent wall, but about giving the room more depth. There is a misconception that dark colors will make the room feel like it is caving in on you. Although black can be slimming in fashion, inside of a room a solid black wall appears to recede into nothingness. Like looking into space, or the night sky, it almost appears to be MORE expansive. This space is so wide that we needed to trick the eye by receding the longest wall backwards, giving us more depth to the room. It created a beautiful frame for the stunning view of the desert landscape through the window.

The bench below was carefully thought out. It not only serves as ample seating, but as an abundance of storage for seasonal dishes, table settings, and other miscellaneous kitchen accessories. We also made these a matte black to disappear into the wall.

The lighting above is one of my favorite parts. The organic ratan pendant really pops against the black, creating a center focal piece against an asymmetrical wall. This style of open weave lets the light cast criss-crossed shadows all along the wall and the ceiling. An added textural bonus and night.

The black of the wall and the warm natural leather of the chairs is a color scheme that will forever be classic. Even the touches of recycled sea glass bring an element of nature into an otherwise contemporary space.
