Going black doesn’t have to be dark and ominous. This client loves high contrast, but rather than juxtaposing with stark whites, we layered various shades of warm whites like ivory and cream to soften the space. 

She wanted light and airy bedding, and for this monochromatic style we brought ALL of the textures. From the dry sticks of the pendants to the creamy linen sheets, the fuzzy boucle bench, hand woven pillows, chunky knit throw, lambs wool and faux fur blankets - the textiles may be predominately white in here but there’s nothing flat or boring about it!


Instead of just painting the wall black, I thought it was important to bring dimension into the large area. I added board and batten in a chevron pattern (see the installation video here), as a nod to the herringbone floor.

The best part about a black wall is that it makes artwork and the other pieces in the space pop. I found these really interesting pendants that look like birds’ nests. I swapped out the white cords for black ones that would disappear into the wall, giving them the illusion of floating in air.

This client loves mid-century modern style, so this low Flag Halyard Chair (a Hans Wegner reproduction) was a perfect corner lounger for reading, watching tv or midday catnapping. This room is lounge heaven - it even has dual sided adjustable bed bases so each partner can prop themselves up without disturbing the other. With vibration and massage, who would even get out of bed?

The final pieces for this room (taking their sweet time) are the custom bed frame, headboard and matching nightstands. But with all the textural details in here you almost don’t miss them. Oh well, good things come to those who wait… stay tuned!
