When you have a small space, whether it’s a studio apartment or an existing room that needs to suddenly be a make-shift office (like so many of us did during the pandemic), then you’ll know that Every. Inch. Counts. One of the best space saving solutions I knew I needed when I was apartment hunting, was a designated dining space that I could also design to be my office.
In my Instagram reveal of this room, I admitted that this was the first time in a long time that I have lived alone. Since I can remember I have either designed with clients in mind or for someone that I have lived with, whether it be a boyfriend, or a roommate. This may be one of the last times I get to design completely for myself, by myself, and with no one else’s opinion but mine. To say I leaned into that to the fullest was an understatement.
From the pink velvet sofa I’ve had my eye on for years, to the dramatic marble pedestal table, wild wallpaper, Mongolian fur and leopard printed pillows, you could safely say this is most men’s actual nightmare. Which, if I'm being honest, might be what I adore the most about it.
Small spaces, if organized and planned well, can serve a million purposes! We don’t always need one room for every new function as long as the design has functionality in mind. For example, choosing a wrap around sofa instead of a single desk chair lets my fur baby sprawl out in the sun by my side while I work… It also comfortably fits several of my girlfriends whenever I get to host brunch. Those two chairs have sat clients across from me in a brainstorming session … as well as the reigning couple I’m trying to beat on game nights.
This room has held so many important memories. Ive never worked so many long hours or laughed so hard late into the night in another other place. And although it’s admittedly the smallest space I’ve ever lived in, I would never have lived it (or decorated it) any other way. Small, eclectic, traditional or minimal, the only thing your home should feel like… is you.
